Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College offers several program options to students who are interested in a career in the field of nursing. Available programs include the short-term Nursing Assistant/Home Health Aid certificate program, a Practical Nursing diploma program, a Mobility  Nursing associate degree program, and a Nursing transfer program in partnership with the College of St. Scholastica.

Nursing training programs continue to be popular choices for people from many diverse backgrounds. The job market outlook for graduating nursing students is excellent and will remain stable over many years as the population ages and requires additional health care services.

Completing a nursing program option is a perfect way to get started on a career in the health care industry. After completion of required courses and exams, students may decide to directly enter the workforce, or continue to complete additional nursing programs. A certificate, diploma or associate degree in Nursing from Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College can lead to additional career opportunities.

Mobility Nursing Option
The Mobility Nursing Program is a comprehensive program that includes three levels of requirements. First is a set of pre-requisite courses and requirements; second are course requirements to earn a Practical Nursing Diploma; and third are requirements to earn an associate of science degree in Mobility Nursing. All classes are held on campus in Cloquet and at practical sites in local health care facilities. The Practical and Mobility Nursing programs require full-time enrollment. Upon completion of program requirements, students will be eligible to take Minnesota Board of Nursing exams.

Students may opt to exit the program after completing all Practical Nursing diploma requirements. A limited number of students who currently hold LPN credentials and are working may be accepted to the Mobility Nursing portion of the program.

The number of students accepted into the Nursing program is limited. A competitive application process is used in early spring each year to determine who is accepted into the program. Information on the application process is available from the Nursing program director, advisors/counselors, and in the Admissions Office. Students may begin working to complete pre-requisite courses at any time.

Nursing Assistant/Home Health Aid Option
Completing the Nursing Assistant/Home Health Aid Program is the fastest way to enter a career in nursing. As a short-term option, completing the NA/HHA certificate program may immediately lead to a professional position because the current job market indicates a high demand and shortage of trained Nursing Assistants and Home Health Aids. This four-credit certificate program can be completed in approximately six weeks. All classes are held in Cloquet. This certificate program is typically offered as a special session within a traditional semester, and includes a cultural diversity component.

Students have liberal access to computer resources and the campus library. Study groups and professional tutoring are available. In addition, student support services are a primary focus of the college. Financial aid assistance is available to eligible students.

Students who have some prior college experience may be able to complete the program in less time. Small class sizes, on-campus child care, and student organizations are added bonuses at Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College.

Practical Nursing Diploma Program
Prerequisite Requirements:
Students must be currently listed on the Minnesota State Nursing Assistant Registry.

CPR certification must be current.

Students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher in all prerequisites. A minimum grade of “C” is needed in all Nursing classes. If a student falls below the 2.8 GPA or receives less than a “C” in any Nursing class they will be dropped from the program.

Students should consult with an advisor/counselor when registering for courses.   Nursing Transfer Program Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College and the College of St. Scholastica have established an articulation agreement for the purpose of facilitating credit transfer and providing a smooth transition from one related degree program to another. The end goal for students in the Nursing Transfer program is a bachelors degree in Nursing from the College of St. Scholastica.
