Urban Outreach Program

Outreach building exteriorThrough the unique Urban Outreach Program, Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College provides educational opportunities to American Indian people living in the Twin Cities metropolitan area. Located in the heart of the American Indian community on Franklin Avenue in south Minneapolis, it’s close to home and convenient to public transportation systems.

If you’ve been thinking about getting started on a college degree or finishing one you started years ago, then you should consider the Urban Outreach Program. It’s a comfortable, convenient way to achieve educational goals and success.

In South Minneapolis
Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College, Minnesota’s first tribal college, offers a wide range of college courses through the Urban Outreach Program. Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College has designed a program to meet the college needs of American Indian learners.

The Urban Outreach Program works with students with a wide range of interests, achievement, and ability levels. We’ll help you get started, or restarted, on an educational goal that means something to you.

Our classroom site is within the Ancient Traders Marketplace, next to coffee and gift shops, grocery stores, Indian service centers and a health clinic, social service program offices, and across the street from the Franklin Library.

Degree and Program Options
Students participating in the Urban Outreach Program can complete an Associate of Arts degree in Liberal Arts. Students can complete this degree in just two years, or longer if attending on a part-time basis. The Associate of Arts degree program provides the perfect foundation for students who may decide to seek a four-year degree from another college or university.

Students enjoy learning more about American Indian issues, language, and traditions through the wide range of American Indian Studies courses and Anishinaabe language courses. Or, maybe you want to do an independent study project in a specific topic of interest. If it’s in your vision, program staff are available to help you succeed in turning that vision into reality.

Take Advantage
Small class sizes, flexible scheduling, and a focus on culturally relevant curriculum make the Urban Outreach Program one of the best learning experiences available to American Indian students. The cultural emphasis is strong, and instructors and staff are sensitive to meeting the needs of learners.

Past students give high ratings to the instructors of the Urban Outreach Program. Students say they like the comfortable atmosphere set by the instructors, and appreciate the extra time instructors spend to discuss topics of interest to a class. Instructors get to know the students on a first-name basis, and they are willing to stay aroundafter class to assist with any difficulties a student may have with a course subject. Our instructors are interested in you, your ambitions, and your talents.

Financial Aid
Students participating in the Urban Outreach Program may be eligible for several sources of financial aid. Typical sources of funding include the American Indian College Fund, federal PELL grants, scholarships, tribal grants, work-study jobs, and student loans. Financial aid can be applied to most costs related to attending college, including tuition, books, special fees, transportation, housing, and child care. A separate application is used to determine individual levels of financial aid.

Transfer Courses
Credits earned through the Urban Outreach Program will transfer to most other colleges and universities in the Twin Cities and throughout the upper Midwest region. Students should work with program staff to plan ahead if considering transferring to another school to complete a four-year degree.

Flexible Schedule
Students can attend either daytime courses or evening courses, depending on personal and works schedules. Also, the Urban Outreach Program accommodates both full-time and part-time students. It's student success that is important, and we understand the importance of having a flexible schedule.
