Applying for Financial Aid

Students smilingStudents must apply for financial aid each year. This is done by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA uses federal tax information from the previous year to determine your financial aid eligibility. To apply, follow these steps:

Apply for a Personal Identification Number (PIN) number.
Both you and your parents should apply for a PIN (electronic signature) at www.pin.ed.gov in order to electronically sign your FAFSA.

Complete the FAFSA.
Using your own and your parent’s federal income tax information from the previous year, complete the FAFSA via the internet at www.fafsa.ed.gov and sign with your PIN numbers. Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College’s FAFSA school code is 031291.

Don’t Hesitate to Ask Questions.
Be proactive and take control of your financial aid process. If you don’t know what the next step is, ask. If you don’t know what a form is, ask. If you don’t know the status of your application, ask. The financial aid system is based on federal and Minnesota state regulations, and there are deadlines that must be met. These deadlines are firm, and if you miss one, you may not receive funding. So begin the financial aid process early, read all the materials mailed to you, and ask if you are unclear on your status.
