The core courses required to complete the Fitness and Health degree program prepares students for degrees in many health care and fitness fields. The requirements provide a broad-based education and offer transfer flexibility in case a student opts to pursue a career in a related area of health care or sports and fitness.
The Fitness and Health degree program focuses on a well-rounded science core that includes Biology, Anatomy, Physiology, and Psychology courses. The two-year degree program also features health and fitness courses and prepares students to successfully take the National Fitness Certification Exam from the American Council on Exercise to become a certified fitness instructor or a certified aerobics instructor.
Students completing the degree program can choose to directly enter the workforce, or transfer to a four-year degree program in a career area requiring specialization. Credits earned in this degree program will easily transfer to most colleges and universities in Minnesota and other states. Students in this degree program should recognize that most health and fitness professions require a minimum of a four-year degree. Completing the first two years of college at Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College makes a lot of sense, both financially and as a matter of convenience.
Employment opportunities include positions in health care settings, public and private fitness centers, educational facilities, community-based agencies, rehabilitation facilities, and wellness centers. Typical job titles include, but are not limited to, certified fitness instructor, personal trainer, recreation leader, aerobics instructor, fitness center attendant, and coach. Students who transfer to another institution to complete a four-year degree will have many opportunities, including careers in exercise science, sports management, community health, physical therapy, physical education instructor, and a very large range of health care and fitness professions.
Unique emphasis
One of the unique elements of the program is the inclusion of an American Indian cultural emphasis that helps prepare students to work with minority populations and the unique issues facing specific groups of people. Graduates and transfer students of the Fond du Lac College program will be well-suited to work in locations serving American Indian people.
Current public health information clearly indicates an increased incidence of obesity and diabetes, particularly among younger people and minority populations. This current data and the accompanying projections suggest a growing need for professionals in the health and fitness career fields. Current labor market information shows a stable-to-slightly increasing job market in many of the careers related to the Fitness and Health degree program. Students should expect a competitive job market when seeking employment.
Fond du Lac College Advantages
Well-qualified faculty and the multi-cultural environment at the college offer opportunities that no other college can provide. A degree or certificate from Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College is greatly valued and respected by prospective employers.
For people who already have some college experience, it may be possible to complete the program in less time. Classes are offered during the day and evening hours, providing the opportunity to create a flexible schedule. Small class sizes, on-campus child care, and student organizations are added bonuses at Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College.
