Living up to mandate and mission
Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College is truly a unique institution and model of serving students in the state of Minnesota. By virtue of Minnesota State Statute 136F.12, Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College is mandated to have the "unique mission among two-year colleges to serve the lower division general education needs in Carlton and south St. Louis Counties, and the education needs of American Indians throughout the state and especially in northern Minnesota."

On average, across the past five years,

  • Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College has added over 1,300 college graduates to Carlton and St. Louis counties, a region where two-thirds of the population reported on the last census not having academic experience beyond high school;
  • Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College has enrolled sixteen percent of Minnesota’s American Indian two-year college students, the highest enrollment rate among Minnesota’s two-year college students;
  • Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College leads Minnesota’s postsecondary institutions, two- and four-year, in American Indian student count;
  • Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College graduates fifteen percent of Minnesota’s American Indian two-year college students, the highest American Indian graduation rate among Minnesota’s two-year colleges; and
  • approximately seventeen percent of Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College’s graduating classes are composed of American Indian students.

Promoting academic excellence

  • For the past five years, approximately 99% of Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College's law enforcement program graduates have passed the Minnesota’s Peace Officer’s Skills Test (POST), the highest passing rate in the state of Minnesota.
  • Over 95% of Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College's human services program graduates who transfer to a four-year institution complete their bachelor's degrees, and almost 25% of those move into master’s programs, a percentage which exceeds that of the student population who begins their education at local four-year institutions.
  • For the past five years, Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College's business program has taken top honors in the national American Indian Business Leaders competitions, being recognized three times as the Chapter of the Year, and consistently taking first place in the business planning and accounting categories; these national competitions include four-year institutions.
  • Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College's nursing program, which graduated its second class of LPN’s in 2009, raised their passing rate on the State nursing board exams from 86% in summer 2008 to 100% in summer 2009.

Each student in these programs has received an education at Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College consisting of a general education curriculum coupled with program-specific coursework that clearly leads to student success. Approximately forty percent of Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College’s students use the college’s general education curriculum for transfer as they further pursue their academic goals.

  • Although approximately 80% of students entering Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College have a GPA of 2.0 (C average) or lower, their average GPA at time of transfer to a four-year institution is 3.12 (B average). Students who transfer from Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College actually perform slightly above their direct-entry peers during the first semester, and their average GPA on completion of a bachelor's degree is also 3.12.
